Buying from a Nevada dealer
Any used car dealer in Nevada must provide a valid passing emissions test with a vehicle that will be registered in Clark or Washoe counties. A test on a Nevada dealer sale is valid for 180 days.

Dealer purchases carry extra protection under the DMV rules. Here is what the DMV's Emission Control page says, and what to do when the next renewal comes around.
Who provides the test on a dealer sale?
The dealer. Per the DMV, any used car dealer in Nevada must provide a valid passing emissions test with any vehicle sold that is going to be registered in Clark or Washoe counties.
How long is that test valid?
180 days from the date of test, compared with 90 days for most other tests. That longer window gives a buyer more time to register.
Does it matter where I register?
The requirement applies to vehicles that will be registered in Clark or Washoe counties. A vehicle based in a county without a testing program is exempt by location.
What about a new car from a dealer?
New vehicles are exempt for their first three registrations and tested at the fourth. See the new vehicle page.
Is a later transfer exempt?
A transfer is exempt if the last test was within 180 days on a Nevada dealer sale, or within 90 days otherwise.
What if the dealer is out of state?
The DMV says out-of-state vehicle dealers must comply with their own state's laws. See the out-of-state vehicle page and the DMV's registration page.
Do I still test every year after the purchase?
Yes. Nevada requires a yearly test for qualifying vehicles, at registration renewal.
How is a private sale different?
In a private transaction the test is the buyer's responsibility. See private party sales.
How does the buyer register?
The DMV says the deadline in most vehicle sales is 30 days from the date of sale. The DMV's registration page lists the documents.
Where do I learn more?
See buying or selling a car and the used car checklist.
What if I do not get a test with a dealer car?
Ask the dealer about it directly. The DMV states the dealer must provide the passing test for a vehicle that will be registered in Clark or Washoe.
How is the 180 day window counted?
From the date of the test, per the DMV, not the date of sale.
After the purchase
Keep your paperwork together in one place. When the first renewal comes, drive into Reno Northwest or Reno South with your renewal notice, and ask about renewing in the same visit.
If you want to check a used car yourself before buying, the check engine light is the first thing to ask about. A lit light is an automatic fail in Nevada.
Dealer sale versus private sale
The big differences are who provides the test and how long it lasts. With a Nevada dealer, the dealer provides it and it lasts 180 days. In a private sale it lasts 90 days and the test is the buyer's responsibility.
Either way, once the vehicle is registered, the yearly cycle begins and each renewal needs its own test, unless the vehicle is exempt.
If you are comparing a dealer car with a private listing, the 180-day dealer test is a real convenience, since it outlasts the usual 90-day window by three months. The vehicle's next yearly test will still be due at renewal.
