Most visits are the yearly renewal test, but the smog check also comes up when you move to Nevada, buy or sell a used car, fail a test, or own something the rules treat differently, like a diesel pickup, a hybrid or a classic. Each page below starts with the answer and cites the Nevada DMV page it comes from.
How the yearly test works
In the Washoe County testing area, gasoline vehicles of any weight and diesels up to 14,000 pounds GVWR, model year 1968 and newer, test every year at registration renewal. New vehicles skip their first three registrations and hybrids their first five model years. A pass is valid 90 days and goes to the DMV electronically, so you can renew the same day.
