Smog rules by vehicle type
Most cars and light trucks based in the Washoe testing area get the same yearly OBD smog check, but the Nevada DMV treats seven kinds of vehicle differently. Each page below starts from the one DMV rule that sets that vehicle apart.

Two things move a vehicle off the ordinary path: its weight class or fuel changes the test method, or it appears on the DMV's exempt list. Here is the one-line rule for each type, with the full page a click away.
The seven rules in one line each
Motorhomes and RVs: gasoline coaches are tested at any weight, with the two-speed tailpipe test; diesel coaches over 14,000 pounds GVWR are exempt from the yearly test.
Motorcycles and mopeds: on the DMV exempt list by name.
Heavy-duty gas trucks: 8,501 pounds and up is heavy duty, tested every year with the two-speed tailpipe method.
Pickup trucks and vans: the 8,500 pound line decides the OBD plug-in test or the tailpipe test, and diesel pickups up to 14,000 pounds GVWR test too.
Leased vehicles: tested every year like any car; a transfer between leasing companies with no change of lessee or operator is exempt (NRS 445B.800).
Replica vehicles: Replica Vehicle registrations are on the exempt list.
Propane and natural gas vehicles: vehicles running permanently on propane, CNG, methane or butane are exempt.

Questions people ask
Still have a question? Call either Reno location or just drive in; there is no appointment to make.
My vehicle is not one of these seven. Which rule applies?
The ordinary one: a gasoline vehicle 1968 or newer, based in the testing area and past its third registration, tests every year at renewal.
Does an exempt vehicle still renew its registration?
Yes. The exemptions cover the emission test only.
Where do I find my vehicle's weight rating?
On the manufacturer's label, usually on the driver's door jamb.
