Your result and the DMV link

The analyzer sends your pass or fail result to the Nevada DMV in real time, so the DMV record updates as the test finishes. You also get a report, and after a pass you can renew right away.

People often ask whether they must carry a paper to the DMV. The result travels electronically; the report in your hand is for your records and, after a fail, for the steps that follow.

How does my result get to the DMV?

The technician scans your VIN with a bar code reader and connects the analyzer cable to the OBD port. The analyzer reads your emission data and shows pass or fail. The DMV states that the result goes to the DMV in real time.

Do I need to take a paper certificate to the DMV?

For an ordinary pass the result is already in the DMV system. Keep the report you are given anyway. When you renew at an emission station, the DMV mails the decal and certificate to you.

What does the report show after a fail?

The DMV calls a failed test a legal document because it shows why the vehicle fails. You need it to start the waiver process, to get a reduced-cost movement permit if your registration has expired, and to ask for a challenge test at the emissions lab.

How soon can I renew after a pass?

Right away. The DMV says you can renew immediately at the station, online at MyDMV, or at a DMV Now kiosk, minutes after the test.

What is MyDMV?

It is the DMV's online service where Nevada drivers renew a registration. The DMV's renewal page lists online, kiosk, emission station and in-person options side by side.

Is the test result the same as my registration?

No. The result only satisfies the smog requirement. The registration is renewed as a separate step, and the DMV is the office that issues the decal.

I renewed at the station. Why two receipts?

The DMV says the smog check and the DMV renewal get separate receipts, since they are two different payments for two different services.

Will I know the result before I leave?

The analyzer shows pass or fail at the end of the test, and the report follows, so you will know the outcome while you are still at the service center.

What if my vehicle was rejected instead?

A rejection is neither a pass nor a fail. It means the vehicle's computer has not finished its self-checks. See not ready and rejected results for what to do.

What if I lose the report?

Your pass is in the DMV system, so a renewal can still go through. After a fail, keep the report with your repair receipts, because the waiver process asks for both.

Does an insurance tracker affect the result?

It can. The DMV says to remove any monitoring device from the OBD port before the test, because technicians are required to fail a vehicle that has a device plugged in. Unplug it before you arrive and the analyzer can connect cleanly.

Pass, fail or rejected

Three outcomes are possible: a pass, a fail, and a rejection when the vehicle is not ready. A pass lets you renew. A fail comes with a report that explains why. The OBD test page describes each step of the check that produces the result.

Whatever the outcome, the record the DMV holds is the one that counts, which is why the electronic link matters more than any piece of paper.
