The 89519 ZIP code area climbs from McCarran Boulevard into Caughlin Ranch and the southwest hills above the Truckee River. Its median age of 51.4 is among the highest in Reno. Garages here are as likely to hold a weekend car or a hybrid as a daily driver, so this page sorts out which of them test and which do not.
At a glance
- About 10 minutes to Reno South (4993 Longley Ln) and 11 to Reno Northwest (6100 Mae Anne Ave).
- Median age 51.4 and 2.22 vehicles per household (ACS 2020-2024).
- Classic plates driven 5,000 miles or less a year can be exempt, with a yearly odometer affidavit.
- New hybrids test in their sixth model year.

Two locations, either side of the ZIP
McCarran Boulevard is the road that matters from 89519. Head south and east on it toward I-580 for Reno South near the Reno-Tahoe airport, about 10 minutes by OpenStreetMap routing. Head north on it across the river and I-80 for Reno Northwest on Mae Anne Avenue, about 11. Pick the direction your day is already going.
Who lives here, in numbers
ACS 2020-2024 estimates put 9,110 people in 3,883 households in the 89519 ZIP code area. Vehicles per household come to 2.22, and 72.1 percent of households have two or more. The mean commute is 19.7 minutes, and only 60.9 percent of workers drive alone, one of the lower shares in Washoe.
A shorter, lighter commute does not change the smog rule: a vehicle based here tests every year whether it covers 3,000 miles or 15,000.
The weekend car
A collector car can come off the yearly test, but only on the DMV's terms. Vehicles 1967 and older are exempt outright. A newer vehicle with Classic Rod, Classic Vehicle or Old Timer plates is exempt when it is driven 5,000 miles or less a year, carries classic or antique insurance with Nevada coverage, and the owner files the EC 018 odometer certification each year. It cannot be used for general transportation or commercial work.
Two catches. The renewal notice still says Smog Check Required, and classic plates cannot be renewed online, by kiosk or at an emission station; the DMV wants an in-person renewal with the documents. The classic and exempt vehicles page has the full list.
Hybrids, electrics and new cars
Electric vehicles are exempt. A new hybrid gets five model years free and is tested in the sixth, and any new vehicle skips its first three registrations (DMV). Count model years, not calendar years, and check the renewal notice if unsure.

- Bring the renewal notice and odometer reading, and unplug any OBD port tracker.
