The 89511 ZIP code area runs from South Virginia Street and I-580 up into the foothills along the Mount Rose Highway, through Galena and the neighborhoods below the mountain. Two things set it apart for a smog check. It is the closest ZIP to the Longley Lane location, and it sits right below the one stretch of Washoe County where the testing line changes: the Lake Tahoe side of Mount Rose.

Five minutes up I-580

From South Virginia Street or the lower end of the Mount Rose Highway, I-580 north brings you to Longley Lane near the Reno-Tahoe airport in about 5 minutes in light traffic by OpenStreetMap routing. From the upper foothills it runs longer. Reno Northwest on Mae Anne Avenue is about 22 minutes, north on I-580 and west on I-80, and makes sense only on a day spent on that side of town.

The line over the mountain

The DMV's Washoe testing area covers Reno, Sparks, Washoe Valley, most of the area west of Washoe Valley and all of Washoe County south of the 40th parallel, with named exceptions. Incline Village and Crystal Bay, on the Lake Tahoe side of the Mount Rose summit, are exempt Washoe areas, along with Sutcliffe, Nixon and Wadsworth.

The rule follows where a vehicle is based, not where it is driven. A car registered to a South Reno address tests every year even if it spends weekends at the lake. A car based at an Incline Village address does not, even if it commutes down the mountain to work. Households that move between the two should check which address is on the registration.
