Is a Verdi address inside the testing area
The DMV describes the Washoe testing area as Reno, Sparks, Washoe Valley, most of the area west of Washoe Valley, and all of Washoe County south of the 40th parallel of latitude. Verdi falls in that western part. The exempt Washoe places the DMV names are Incline Village, Crystal Bay, Sutcliffe, Nixon and Wadsworth.
If your vehicle is based at a Verdi address, plan on the yearly test. If you are unsure about a particular address, the DMV Emission Lab can confirm at (775) 684-3580, and the Washoe areas page shows how the lines are drawn.
Verdi's Census profile
The Census Bureau counts 1,012 residents in 527 households in the Verdi community. About 88 percent of those households have two or more vehicles, one of the highest shares on this site. The median age is 49.7 and the mean commute is 23.1 minutes, with 73 percent driving alone.
The Census does not give a vehicle total for Verdi in the tables we used, so this page leaves that figure out rather than guess at it.
Planning the drive from the state line side
Coming from Verdi, build the smog check into a trip to the Reno side of the county. Reno Northwest is open Monday to Friday 8 am to 5 pm and Saturday 8 am to 4 pm, so a Saturday morning errand run fits well. Allow the 13-minute drive in light traffic, more at rush hour.
A drive-in visit needs no appointment. The DMV says most OBD tests are completed in five minutes or less, and the result goes to the DMV electronically.
If you recently moved or changed plates
Verdi sits near the California line, so some households arrive with out-of-state registrations. New residents have 30 days to get a Nevada driver license and registration, and the emissions report is part of registering a vehicle based in a testing area.
Our new to Nevada page lists what to bring. A test is valid for 90 days, so schedule it close to when you register.
