# P0441 and your Nevada smog check

P0441 means the engine computer saw the wrong amount of purge flow, the stream of stored fuel vapor that the evaporative emission system sends from its canister into the engine to be burned. It lights the check engine lamp, and in Nevada any 1996 or newer light-duty vehicle with that lamp on fails the smog check.

4.7 stars from 550 Google reviews of the two Reno Xpress Oil & Lube Centers

Most EVAP codes are about leaks. P0441 is about movement. The system can be perfectly sealed and still set this code if the vapor it has collected is not being drawn into the engine the way the computer expects, or is being drawn in when it should not be. For the smog test the distinction does not matter much; for the repair shop it matters a lot.

## At a glance

- The SAE J2012 definition reads: Evaporative emission system incorrect purge flow.
- Purge is the step where stored fuel vapor is burned in the engine instead of escaping.
- A lamp lit for P0441 fails a 1996 or newer light-duty vehicle at the Nevada OBD test.
- Clearing the code before testing leads to a not ready rejection, not a pass.

## Storing vapor, then burning it

Think of the evaporative emission system as two jobs. The first is storage: vapor from the fuel tank collects in a charcoal canister instead of venting into the air. The second is purge: when the engine is warm and running, a purge valve opens and engine vacuum pulls that vapor out of the canister and into the intake, where it burns with the fuel.

SAE J2012 names the code for a problem with the second job: Evaporative emission system incorrect purge flow. Incorrect can mean too little, none, or flow at the wrong time. The computer judges it by watching how the engine and the system respond when it commands the purge valve open or closed.

## Why a flow problem lights the lamp

If vapor cannot be purged, the canister eventually fills and vapor has nowhere to go but out. That is the pollution the system exists to prevent, so OBD II treats a purge fault like any other emissions fault: it stores the code and turns on the lamp, which stays on until the repair is done.

## Smog check day

The lamp settles it. With P0441 lit, the OBD test result is a fail for a 1996 or newer light-duty vehicle, and the report goes to the DMV electronically. The DMV's advice is to get tested anyway: the failed report shows why the vehicle fails, entitles you to a challenge test at the emissions lab, and starts the waiver process. Repairs paid for before that first failed test do not count toward a waiver.

A purge fault can come and go with temperature and driving, so the lamp you saw last week may or may not be lit when you pull in. The analyzer reads what the computer reports on the day of the test.

## Common causes a repair shop checks

Xpress Smog Check Center tests vehicles; a repair shop finds the cause. Common causes a repair shop checks include:

- A purge valve that sticks open or closed.
- A purge valve wiring or connector fault.
- A vacuum or vapor hose that is blocked, kinked or off.
- A charcoal canister that is clogged or damaged.

## Before you come in

A few things are worth doing first, in this order.

- Look at the gas cap. It is not the usual cause of a purge code, but the DMV names a loose cap as a common cause of a sudden lamp, and it costs nothing to check.
- Ask the dealer about federal emissions warranty coverage or a recall; EVAP parts are emission equipment, and federal law covers some expensive emission components up to 8 years or 80,000 miles.
- If the car was just repaired, drive it up to a week in mixed city and highway conditions before the retest. The purge check is part of the EVAP self-test, and it has to finish again after codes are cleared.
- Remove any insurance tracker or other device from the diagnostic port. Technicians are required to fail a vehicle with one plugged in.

## Retest or waiver

After a repair the lamp should stay off, the monitors finish, and the retest passes. If the lamp is still on after repairs, Washoe County's waiver requires at least $200 in related repairs at a 2G licensed authorized station, or at least $200 in related parts the owner bought within 14 days of the initial test. Our [repair and retest page](https://xpresssmogcenter.com/smog-check/repair-and-retest/) covers the retest side and the [waiver page](https://xpresssmogcenter.com/smog-check/smog-waiver/) the rest.

### P0441, the generic definition

Evaporative emission system incorrect purge flow

The SAE J2012 code title. The same P0 code means the same thing on every 1996 and newer OBD II vehicle; the cause behind it differs car to car.

## P0441 questions

Still have a question? Call either Reno location or just drive in; there is no appointment to make.

### Is P0441 a leak?

Not in the usual sense. The leak codes are [P0455](https://xpresssmogcenter.com/codes/p0455/), [P0442](https://xpresssmogcenter.com/codes/p0442/) and [P0456](https://xpresssmogcenter.com/codes/p0456/). P0441 is about vapor flowing to the engine incorrectly.

### Can I drive with P0441?

The DMV's stop-driving warning is for a flashing light. A steady lamp means an emissions fault that will fail the smog check until it is repaired.

### Will the lamp go out after the repair?

The DMV says the lamp stays on until the repair is complete. After that, allow time for the self-checks to finish before the retest.
